After rattling for years, and now finally loose over the past couple days, I decided not to listen to my mother's advice to bring it to a shop, so I did it myself.
Is heat an issue now the shield is removed? I'll keep a close eye on it either way, I got an IR gun.

Here's how it was before, only thing holding it up was the catalytic converter.

Shouldn't be a big deal, just don't drive over any tall grass on a hot dry day.

Not very common occurrence for me. Ill keep it in mind though.

I'm not sure I understand your logic? Isn't the heat shield is normally in between the exhaust and the floor and not under the exhaust to keep the heat away from the ground. with the heat shield on or off it would still catch tall dry grass on fire or am I missing something?

There are both types of heatshields, it looks like he took of the bottom one, could be wrong though.

Is that a 180 degree bend in the exhaust?

I had mine off for about a year now, though it wasn't exactly "voluntary" (a snow bank and my liking to park in my normal spot contributed, also probably using my car as a plow instead of shoveling). I made a 5000 mile trip to Florida and back at the end of June, didn't have any issues. No noticeable warming inside the car, A/C kept up fine, etc. I intended to straighten it out and put it back on, but didn't get around to doing it yet. As long as there's nothing flammable on the other side of it, it should be fine.

1: Throw it away.
2: Tell your mother it is back on.
3. ????
4. Profit.
